Hello BIFIWINKLER,
You can change the color of the menu items when hovered. Open the template in the Joomla admin section and click on options > customize. Once the customizer has opened, click on advanced and scroll down till you reach Nav. Click on "more" and then for "Nav Hover Color," enter the color of your choice, in this case, I would prefer #ffffff for a red background.

Images can be changed via custom.css file. Please let me know which specific image you would like to change and I will give you the exact line. You may also inspect using firebug to find out which lines to change. Save all your css changes to custom.css.
