Go to admin Joomla > VirtueMart Configuration > Templates > VirtueMart Home Page Settings and set Default number of categories and products in a row parameter to 4.

No slideshow, all messed up. How can I fix this?

It is because you installed multilingual support during the installation, try to reinstall the template using quick-start package without installing it.
